The Real Battle Begins

The Garuda Indonesia International Photo Contest (GIIPC) 2008 is set to reach its final stage after a qualification phase that begun over 5 months ago.

No less than 14,000 photos were sent by participants from 21 countries in Asia, Europe and the United States.  Not surprisingly, the number of participants in this international photo competition has reached 4,000 with many coming from countries around the world.

GIIPC 2008 is presented under a different format from other photo contests, especially its final stage.  A number of Indonesian tourist destinations have been designated as "hunting trips", with participants spread out to five different locations across the country .

Medan, Yogyakarta, Banjarmasin, Manado and Lombok are set to provide great experiences for the finalists' cameras.

The cities have been chosen on the basis of their tourism potential and in the framework of bolstering Visit Indonesia Year 2008 GIIPC 2008, which sets out to show the wealth of Indonesia in terms of its culture and natural beauty.

20 Finalists will compete at this stage. They are Gunawan Rustandi, Armelo Wiryantomo, Anthony Nababan, Antonius Pratomo, Yohanes Mangitung, Rommy Perbawa, Cahyo Nugroho, Thomas Suryono, Adam Dwi, Yousel Evandross, Iman Brotoseno, Made Dana (Indonesia), Vo Phi Long (Vietnam), Ho Hin Wing (Hong Kong), Liang Huan Chuan and Goh Koon Peng (Singapore), Pang Piow Kan (Malaysia) and Prakash Hatvalne (India), Kyaw Kyaw Win (Myanmar) and Barry Acott (Australia).

Their photos will be judged by a panel of jury comprising 10 senior photographers, namely Goenadi Haryanto, Arbain Rambey, Jan Dekker, Oscar Motulloh, Jerry Aurum, Makarios Soekojo, Prijastono Purwanto (Indonesia), Tan Lip Seng (Singapore), Minoru Masujima (Japan).

The announcement of the winners will take place on Friday, 29 August, 2008, at 6pm (Indonesian eastern time) at Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel Kuta Bali.

The finalists will vie for a total of US$5,000 in cash money plus Garuda Indonesia tickets to all international and domestic destinations for Winners I, II and III.

The Garuda Indonesia International Photo Contest 2008 will also present special citations in the Best Landscape Category to Olivier Ralliere (France) and A.K Moe (Myanmar) for the Best People/Culture Category.
